Episode II - The Story We Tell
It's true that race has always been with us, right? Wrong. Ancient peoples stigmatized "others" on the grounds of language, custom, class and especially religion, but they did not sort people according to physical differences. It turns out that the concept of race is a recent invention, only a few hundred years old, and the history and evolution of the idea are deeply tied to the development of the U.S.

Join us for a 3-part discussion with Beverly Braxton to explore the concept of race, how it has shaped our lives, and how the United States has evolved as a racialized society. Using the 3-part documentary film Race - The Power of an Illusion as our guide, we will explore the myths and realities of race in our society, with the goal of expanding our understanding.

Come watch the movie and then learn the dance moves! Unateresa Gormely will teach the Irish dance sets of Darby O'Gill. Suitable for all ages!

A ceili ("kay-lee") is a traditional Irish gathering for fun, fellowship, and laughs (or "craic," as the Irish might say.) Traditional ceili dances were enjoyed at house parties and corner road gatherings in the rural countrysides and are still danced in Ireland. The bonfire, haymaker's jig, Siege of Ennis, fairy reel and other dances are very easy to learn. These traditional country folk dances have a follow-the-leader pattern that new dancers can learn on their first attempt -- so come and join us for an evening of fun!

Anthony Speiser, Director of the Newington-Cropsey Foundation Gallery of Art, will give an illustrated talk on the life and works of Hudson River School artist Jasper Cropsey, with special emphasis on Cropsey's artworks showing Warwick and nearby areas which were created while he made his home here.
